Caroline Cochrane's Suggestions for Selkirk Live Borders venues
Added at 18:09 on 29 June 2025
An independent report on proposed savings on the annual Live Borders budget has provoked concern in Selkirk, because of the report’s suggestion to close Live Borders assets in Selkirk including the Leisure Centre and Sir Walter Scott's Courtroom. Although Scottish Borders Councillors have stressed that no closure decisions have actually been taken and the public are being consulted, the report does propose the closure of Selkirk Leisure Centre, Sir Walter Scott’s Courtroom, Halliwell’s House Museum, and the Argus Community Centre, as well as the sale of Victoria Park caravan site.
This has now been opened up to public consultation via a survey, which is live until the end of August. The survey can be found here:
This doesn’t mean that there can’t be positive ideas to rethink the appeal of Selkirk’s venues and increase support. Selkirk elected SBC Councillor Caroline Cochrane has submitted her own suggestions as a private citizen for consideration, as below.

Scottish Borders Council has announced details of a series of drop-in events, to allow the public to have their say on the future of libraries, leisure centres and public halls.
Selkirk’s will be in The Victoria Halls on Wednesday 13th August, from 2pm to 7pm.
