D-Day 80 Beacon lit on 5th June

Added at 12:00 on 09 June 2024

A special commemorative beacon for D-Day 80 was lit at the War Memorial at sunset on the 5th of June, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Normandy landings, and remembering the night before the assault, possibly the last sunset that many lost servicemen would have seen. The event was organised by Selkirk & Ettrick Forest Branch RBLS, with the beacon lit by Bruce Mercer, Vice-Chair of the Branch and Standard Bearer 2024 for Selkirk Ex-Soldiers Association.

The beacon was kindly supplied by James Maybury, and a separate short service was held at the War Memorial on the morning on Friday 6th June, accompanied by a piped lament.
